Locked out of your Dart Charge account? How to recover it
The Dart Charge portal has been rebuilt more than once, and older accounts didn't always carry across cleanly — so 'my login doesn't work' is one of the most common Dartford problems. Here's the way back in.
Before you cancel anything
The crossing must be paid by midnight the day after you cross, logged in or not. If the deadline is close, pay as a one-off at gov.uk first (no account needed) — recover the account after. A £70 PCN beats any password problem.
Step by step, on the National Highways (Dart Charge) website
- 1Go to the Dart Charge service on gov.uk and choose sign in → 'Forgotten password'.
- 2Use every email address you might have registered with — pre-2023 accounts especially may be under an old one.
- 3If the reset email never arrives, your account may not have survived a platform migration — you may simply need a fresh account (any pre-paid balance can be chased via the phone line).
- 4Once in, check the balance and that auto top-up still points at a live card.

The fastest route in practice
Call Dart Charge on 0300 300 0120, pass telephone security, and they can recover the account, merge a stranded old one, or take a payment — usually quicker than debugging a reset email that never comes.

Common questions
I had credit on an old account I can't reach — is it gone?
Not necessarily. The phone team can look up old accounts by your details and vehicle and advise on recovering or refunding a stranded balance.
Can I pay a crossing without the account?
Yes — the gov.uk one-off payment needs no login, and it's the right move whenever a deadline is near. Never let account recovery run past midnight-the-next-day.
How do I get out of this cycle for good?
Register the vehicle once with Snaptoll: Dartford (and every other scheme we cover) is then paid automatically — no balance to keep topped up, no annual login you've forgotten, no midnight deadline hanging on a password reset.
