How to close a Dart Charge account (or remove a vehicle)
A Dart Charge account holds a prepaid balance and pays your Dartford crossings from it at the discounted rate. To move one car you just remove the vehicle from the account; close the whole account only if nothing else uses it.
Before you cancel anything
Time it carefully: the moment a vehicle is off the account, its crossings cost the full rate and must be paid separately by midnight the day after each crossing — miss that and it's a £70 PCN. Make sure replacement cover is active before you remove the vehicle, and don't cross in the gap.
Step by step, on the National Highways website
- 1Sign in to your Dart Charge account on gov.uk.
- 2Go to your vehicle list and remove the vehicle you're moving.
- 3If you're closing the whole account, use the close-account option in account settings (or call — see below). Any remaining prepaid balance is refunded to you.
- 4Keep an eye out for the closure confirmation; allow up to 10 working days for the account to fully close.

The fastest route in practice
The phone is the reliable route for full closure: call Dart Charge on 0300 300 0120 and ask to close the account — they confirm the balance refund on the same call. For just removing one vehicle, the website is quick.

Common questions
What happens to my prepaid balance?
It's refunded when the account closes. Removing a single vehicle doesn't touch the balance — it stays for your other cars.
I crossed the day I removed my car — am I covered?
Only if the crossing happened while the vehicle was still on an account. Otherwise you must pay the one-off charge by midnight the day after the crossing at gov.uk — set a reminder the moment you cross.
