How to cancel TfL Auto Pay (or move a vehicle off it)

TfL Auto Pay covers the Congestion Charge, ULEZ and the Blackwall & Silvertown tunnels from one account. You don't have to close the whole account to move one car — removing the vehicle from the Auto Pay vehicle list is enough, and it keeps the account for your other cars.

Before you cancel anything

Don't remove a vehicle until its replacement cover is active, and avoid driving in the zones in the gap — while a plate is registered on neither account, nobody is paying and a £180 PCN can follow. TfL will still collect any charges the vehicle incurred while it was on your Auto Pay.

Step by step, on the Transport for London website

  1. 1Sign in at tfl.gov.uk (Pay to drive in London → sign in to your account).
  2. 2Open Auto Pay → Manage vehicles.
  3. 3Remove the vehicle you're moving (or close Auto Pay entirely under account settings if the account only exists for this car).
  4. 4Check the vehicle list shows it gone — that's the moment TfL stops charging your account for it.
  5. 5Expect one final Direct Debit for charges already incurred that month; that's normal and yours to pay.

The fastest route in practice

Forgotten your password? The reset flow asks security questions set years ago, and most people can't answer them. Skip it: call TfL on 0343 222 2222 (Mon–Sat 06:00–midnight), say you want to remove a vehicle from Auto Pay or close Auto Pay, and pass telephone security instead — in practice this is the fastest route by far.

Common questions

Will TfL refund anything when I cancel?

Auto Pay bills in arrears by monthly Direct Debit, so there's usually nothing held to refund — your final statement simply collects what the vehicle incurred up to removal.

Do I need to cancel the Direct Debit at my bank too?

Close Auto Pay first and let TfL take the final settlement, then the mandate has nothing left to collect. Cancelling the Direct Debit at the bank BEFORE TfL has collected outstanding charges can turn those charges into PCNs.

Can one car be on two Auto Pay accounts?

No — TfL allows a vehicle on one Auto Pay list at a time, which is exactly why the old registration must come off before new cover can go on.
